Roof Repair And Installing Shingles,The roof has to be done in two stages, doing the back half first. This side of the roof needs to be reinforced, adding new supports inside the attic and cutting off old ones that were bearing on unsupported ceiling joist. Also, increasing the depth of the original 2×5 rafters by adding new 2×4 rafters above each old one, solidly attached to the old ones with gussets and screws. The new framing then had to be re-sheathed with OSB, and to make it watertight with rain expected, covered with ice and water shield.
With the risk of the roof leaking out of the way, the overhang could then be finished from below. It is wider than the original – 18″ at the rakes and 24″ at the eave, and that was one of the objectives for this project.
It took 1-1/2 days to put the shingles on, for a total of 6 days to complete this side. Special thanks to my brother Don for lending a hand to get the framing done, the OSB and the ice and water shield put on before the rain came.
The front half will not be done the same way, as the situation is different. I will just re-frame the overhang wider and re-sheath the roof deck with OSB.
A new beam and support posts will have to be installed under the section of roof above the porch, as it just cantilevers out now.
